Sheridan Smith, Ria Jones and Danny Mac among nominees for Manchester Theatre Awards

The nominees have been announced for this year's Manchester Theatre Awards with The Lowry in Salford leading the way with 15 nominations across the 21 categories.

Duncan Macmillan's People, Places and Things received four nominations including Best Production alongside The Father at Oldham Coliseum, Rose at HOME and The Suppliant Women at the Royal Exchange.

In the Best Musical category, Funny Girl (Palace Theatre), Bat out of Hell (Opera House), Sunset Boulevard (Palace Theatre) and Yank! (Hope Mill Theatre) battle it out, while Sheridan Smith (Funny Girl), Laura Pitt-Pulford (Nell Gwynn), Ria Jones and Danny Mac (Sunset Boulevard) recognised in their respective acting categories.

The trailblazing Hope Mill Theatre receives six nominations for shows including Little Women, Yank! and Gypsy Queen, while last year's Manchester International Festival picks up just two nominations for Returning to Reims and What If Women Ruled the World?.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony held at The Lowry on 9 March.
