Julie Madly Deeply (Trafalgar Studios)
Whitehall's alive with the sound of Julie this Christmas as Sarah-Louise Young brings her ebullient mix of song and mimicry to the Trafalgar Studios in Julie Madly Deeply.
Tucked away in the smaller of the two studios, there is barely room to swing a cat, let alone fly a kite, but Young – winner of Best Musical Variety Act at the 2013 London Cabaret Awards – combines sweet vocals, an entourage of characters and a wonderfully witty rapport with her audience, to take us on a journey through the highs and lows of one of our most loved performers.
From a tricky relationship with her alcoholic stepfather to a bodged operation which ruined her voice forever, this production is enlightening as much as it is entertaining.
The show is made up of sketches, songs, personal anecdotes and audience interaction – Young delights in finding out that her audience is predictably made up of other Julie 'Superfans'. But if like me, you are not so clued up on Dame Andrews' work outside of playing nun and nanny, then do not fear, this show has something for everyone and the slick pace ensures you're not left guessing for too long.
It's obvious that Young revels in her interactions with the audience, but what is even more palpable is her lifelong passion for her subject. Add to all of this the accompaniment of musical director Michael Roulston, whose subtle exchanges with Young produce some of the night's funniest moments, and you have a great night out for all, superfan or otherwise.
