The Watermill Theatre has appointed Paul Hart as its new artistic and executive director.

Hart, currently a freelance director, has previously worked with companies including Pentabus and Propeller, where he is an associate director. Last year he directed Journey's End at the Watermill.

"I am thrilled to be taking the reins at the Watermill," he said today. "It is a space like no other, which nourishes a relationship between actors and audiences in an extraordinary way."

Chair Andrew Tuckey added: "I have every confidence that he will develop the Watermill’s artistic reputation, offering great opportunities to theatre makers of tomorrow and welcoming audiences to our unique venue with a wide variety of work."

Hart takes up the position in the Autumn, succeeding Hedda Beeby who steps down after eight years. Beeby will continue as part-time associate producer for a handover period.
