The nominations for the 2018 Stage Awards have been announced, with The Believers Are But Brothers and the National Theatre's smart glasses going head-to-head in the innovation category.

Javaad Alipoor's The Believers has been shortlisted for The Stage Innovation Award alongside the National Theatre's Open Access Smart Capture pilot scheme, and the return of the Liverpool rep company at the Everyman Theatre.

Hull City of Culture has also been shortlisted for the Producer of the Year award alongside Michael Harrison and Sadler's Wells. London Theatre of the Year category sees the Almeida Theatre, National Theatre and Barbican all recognised, while Birmingham Hippodrome, Royal Exchange and Sherman Theatre all vie for the Regional Theatre of the Year.

Organisations and the public were able to submit nominations from October to November and the list was supplemented by a focus group of 30 industry figures and writers for The Stage.

The shortlist and winners are decided by a judging panel which is comprised of Alistair Smith, Mark Shenton, Lyn Gardner, Sam Marlowe and Natasha Tripney.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in January at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
