Snapshots from New York: Original Hedwig takes Broadway at last, Hamilton transfers

Six key stories from TheaterMania summarising this month’s theatrical goings-on in New York City

In the city that never sleeps, a lot can happen in only a few weeks – and that's especially true in the theatre community. February brought us everyone from Alexander Hamilton to Tommy Tune, so check out six snapshots from the month…

1. Country music superstar Jennifer Nettles joins Broadway's Chicago

Sugarland lead singer Jennifer Nettles joined the cast of Broadway's Chicago in the role of Roxie Hart on 3 February. We have a video preview from rehearsal, photos from her joyous opening night, as well as a images from a recent rehearsal and some sexy promotional shots.


2. Jeremy Jordan, Laura Benanti, Ramin Karimloo and more in Parade concert at Lincoln Centre

For the third year running, Lincoln Centre has hosted Manhattan Concert Productions' staged versions of closed Broadway favourites. This year, Jeremy Jordan and Laura Benanti (along with lots of other musical-theatre favourites) starred in Jason Robert Brown's Parade. 3. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton opened at the Public Theatre and announced its Broadway transfer

In The Heights scribe Lin-Manuel Miranda's new American history-themed musical Hamilton opened at the Public Theatre to great acclaim and only a week later called a mysterious press conference to announce it would be transferring to Broadway. Additionally, Frozen favourite Jonathan Groff has been cast in the role of King George.


4. Original Hedwig John Cameron Mitchell comes to Broadway, with Darren Criss up next

Hedwig and the Angry Inch writer John Cameron Mitchell stepped back into Hedwig's stilettos in late January. Because Mitchell suffered an injury early in his run and was (temporarily replaced by Michael C Hall), we only recently got to see these great images from the production. When Mitchell takes his leave from the production, we'll feel the loss a little less because his replacement will be Glee star Darren Criss.

We recently spoke with with Mitchell about his return to the role.


5. Tommy Tune, Patti Murin and more starred in Lady, Be Good

On 4 February, nine-time Tony winner Tommy Tune starred alongside newer Broadway favourites Patti Murin and Colin Donnell in New York City Centre Encores! production of the George and Ira Gershwin classic Lady, Be Good! Our photos from the curtain call suggest it was a joyful collaboration.


6. Brooklyn's Kings Theatre reopened
