An anonymous donor has given £1 million to Shoreditch Town Hall to enable the historic venue to continue the next phase of redevelopment.

One of east London's last remaining Victorian music halls, the venue is currently undergoing major works to enable the whole building to be restored.

The latest donation takes to £2.1 million the total amount raised since director Nick Giles took the helm in 2011.

Giles said today: "We are absolutely thrilled to receive this donation which affords us an incredible opportunity to complete the next important phase of our work developing the Town Hall's capacity and flexibility as a unique arts and events space."

He added that the donation will help to "move our programme up a gear", allowing the venue to invest around £100,000 annually in "new artistic projects and the building", including the main Assembly Hall.

In addition, the funding also allows for the completion of passenger lift works, the expansion of technical facilities and a new bar off the main entrance hall.
