Producers have confirmed that Sheridan Smith will play Fanny Brice in Michael Mayer's production of Funny Girl.

The award-winning actress whose stage credits include Legally Blonde, Flare Path and A Midsummer Night's Dream, tweeted last month to say: "In other news much more important…. I'm playing Fanny Brice in Funny Girl!!!"

But it has now been officially confirmed that the actress will take on the lead in the production, the first time Funny Girl has been seen in London since Barbra Streisand originated the role in 1966.

Jule Styne and Bob Merrill's musical is based on the life and career of Broadway star Fanny Brice, and her relationship with Nick Arnstein.

It features songs including "People", "Don't Rain on My Parade" and "I'm the Greatest Star".

The Menier's production will have design by Michael Pavelka, choreography by Lynne Page and musical supervision from Alan Williams. Further casting is to be announced.

Funny Girl opens on 2 December, with previews from 20 November, and runs until 5 March 2016.
