Sheridan Smith is in discussions to appear in Funny Girl at the Menier Chocolate Factory, according to Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail.

The award-winning actress, whose stage credits include Legally Blonde, Flare Path and A Midsummer Night's Dream, met today with American director Michael Mayer to discuss the role, but according to Bamigboye "has not fully made up her mind".

If Smith rains on Mayer's parade and is not on board then it's likely that the production won't go ahead; if it does then it will be the first time Funny Girl has been seen in London since Barbra Streisand originated the role in 1966.

Jule Styne and Bob Merrill's musical is based on the life and career of Broadway star Fanny Brice, and her relationship with Nick Arnstein.

It features songs including "People", "Don't Rain on My Parade" and "I'm the Greatest Star".

Update: According to Baz Bamigboye, Smith has agreed to play Fanny Brice, although contracts are still being drawn up. The Menier and director Mayer both reportedly would like the production to transfer to the West End after the Menier; Sonia Friedman holds the West End rights.
