Robert Icke's adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's Mary Stuart opened at the Duke of York's last night.

The production, directed by Icke, stars Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams who alternate the roles of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I based on the spin of a coin at each performance.

Mary Stuart opened at the Almeida in 2016 and now transfers to the West End for a limited run.

In her review for WhatsOnStage, Daisy Bowie-Sell called the production a 'brilliantly adapted, directed and acted version of one of the best plays ever written.'

Mary Stuart runs at the Duke of York's Theatre until 31 March.
