Max Stafford-Clark steps down from Out of Joint

The artistic director has been at the head of the company for 23 years

Artistic director of Out of Joint Max Stafford-Clark is to step down from the company.

After 23 years the director has announced he is leaving the company to focus on his international freelance career. Earlier this year it was announced that Kate Wasserberg would become joint co-director with Stafford-Clark.

Under Stafford-Clark Out of Joint has premiered plays by playwrights including Caryl Churchill, April De Angelis, Richard Bean, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Robin Soans and Timberlake Wertenbaker. He was artistic director of the Royal Court between 1979 and 1993.

Stafford-Clark originally founded Out of Joint with Sonia Friedman in 1993.

The company's production of Rita, Sue and Bob Too opens at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton this week.
