Society of London Theatre has announced producer Kenny Wax as its new president.

Wax started his career as an usher at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1989, and went on to set up his own production company in 1997. His productions include the Olivier Award-winning Top Hat, Once On This Island (both Best New Musical) and The Play That Goes Wong (Best New Play).

His current productions include the West End runs of The Play That Goes Wong (also Broadway), Comedy About A Bank Robbery and La Strada, and the UK tours of Around The World In 80 Days, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and Room On The Broom.

Wax's appointment comes after the conclusion of Caro Newling's three-year contract which started in June 2014.

On his appointment, Wax said: "As we face new challenges and opportunities, SOLT’s work is more important than ever. It is an honour to have been asked to take on this role and to help our members safeguard our industry".

Julian Bird, SOLT's chief executive, said: "In an ever-changing and fast-moving industry, Kenny will be a huge asset to the organisation. Having worked at every level in theatre, there is no better champion of our work."
