Jermyn Street Theatre announces first season as a producing house

Tom Littler has announced his first season as artistic director of the Jermyn Street Theatre, and has relaunched it as a producing house.

This year, rather than operating as a receiving house, the theatre will produce its own work for its autumn season, collaborating with regional theatres and other companies in co-productions.

The season opens with the world premiere of Howard Brenton’s The Blinding Light. The play is about Swedish playwright Strindberg's infamous breakdown in Paris in 1896 – a time which he called his 'Inferno' period. Littler directs the production which runs from 6 September.

Anything That Flies is a Jermyn Street production directed by Alice Hamilton. Set in London in 1991, Judith Burnley's play is about a German carer who arrives to look after an elderly Jewish immigrant. The play will look at the lives of refugees and people who see themselves as 'citizens of nowhere'. It gets its world premiere on 20 October.

In November, Brenton's version of Strindberg's Miss Julie will get its premiere. The first revival of Miss Julie in the West End since 2000, the play is about a young aristocrat on Midsummer's Eve in Sweden in 1888. Tom Littler directs Charlotte Hamblin, James Sheldon, and Izabella Urbanowicz in this co-production between the Jermyn Street and Theatre by the Lake. The play opens on 15 November in London, and 4 July in Keswick.

The final production of the season will be an adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles. Lotte Wakeham (associate director of Matilda) will direct this co-production between Jermyn Street and English Theatre Frankfurt which opens on 8 December.

Littler has also announced a series of new appointments to the theatre's team. Stella Powell-Jones joins as deputy director, Julia Mucko will be resident producer, Tom McClane-Williamson joins as trainee director and Natasha Rickman will be the theatre's artistic associate.
