British actors Eddie Redmayne, Ruth Wilson and Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt were among the winners of the 72nd Golden Globes.

Redmayne, whose stage credits include Red and Richard II at the Donmar Warehouse, described winning for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything as "an incredible thing". Redmayne is also nominated for a BAFTA alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, who he beat to the Golden Globe.

Other theatre names claiming prizes included outgoing Old Vic artistic director Kevin Spacey, for House of Cards, though Rosamund Pike and Keira Knightley, who were nominated for Gone Girl and The Imitation Game, missed out.

Disney's big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods also went home empty handed.

The Golden Globes were announced in Hollywood last night in a ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The big success of the night was the coming-of-age film Boyhood, which won three Globes including best director.
