British actor Eddie Redmayne added to his sweep of awards for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything by bagging the biggest one of all, an Oscar, last night.

Redmayne, whose stage credits include Richard II and Red at the Donmar Warehouse, dedicated the award to "all of those people around the world battling ALS [Motor Neurone Disease]".

His mantelpiece also boasts a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the role.

Redmayne got his first acting break in Sam Mendes' West End production of Oliver! in 1992, and made his professional debut ten years later as Viola opposite Mark Rylance in Twelfth Night at Shakespeare's Globe.

Other winners last night included Julianne Moore, JK Simmons, Patricia Arquette and Birdman, the film about a washed-up actor attempting to redeem his career on Broadway, which scooped four awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

The 87th Academy Awards were hosted at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles by Neil Patrick Harris, who became the first person to have hosted the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys.
