Sir Derek Jacobi will play Mercutio in Kenneth Branagh's production of Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick Theatre next year.

The veteran actor said: "It’s always a privilege to return to Shakespeare. The role of Mercutio is an exciting and intriguing challenge to take on".

The titular star-crossed lovers will be played by Richard Madden and Lily James, who Branagh recently directed on screen in Disney's Cinderella alongside Jacobi.

The production, which runs from 12 May to 14 August 2016, features as part of Branagh's season at the Garrick Theatre, which also includes The Winter's Tale with Judi Dench, Harlequinade, The Painkiller with Rob Brydon and The Entertainer, starring Branagh.

Derek Jacobi has won numerous plaudits over his career and was a founder member of the National Theatre. Some of his recent stage credits include Twelfth Night and King Lear, and recent TV appearances include Last Tango in Halifax and Vicious with Sir Ian McKellen.
