The Young Vic have announced that Billie Piper will star in a new play based on Federico García Lorca's Spanish play Yerma.

The production will mark Piper's debut at the Young Vic and the actress will take the titular role of a woman whose inability to have a child tears her life apart.

Piper's previous theatre credits include Great Britain, The Effect (National Theatre) for which she received an Olivier nomination for Best Actress, Reasons To Be Pretty (Almeida) and Treats (Garrick).

The update of Lorca's play will be written and directed by Simon Stone and will be the Australian director's first original work for the UK. The production will feature design by Lizzie Clachan, costumes by Alice Babidge, light by James Farncombe and music and sound by Stefan Gregory.

Further casting is yet to be announced.

Yerma runs at the Young Vic from 4 August to 24 September, with previews from 28 July.
