Actor Barrie Ingham dies aged 82

Actor Barrie Ingham, known for leading roles in the West End and with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre, has died aged 82.

Among his major stage credits were Gypsy opposite Angela Lansbury in the West End and Aspects of Love with Sarah Brightman on Broadway. He appeared in a number of plays with close friend Judi Dench, primarily with the RSC.

Ingham's death was confirmed on Sunday in a statement on his website:

With great sadness, Barrie's family announce that he passed away in the early hours of Thursday 23 January. Barrie had been ill since Christmas. He passed away peacefully at home with his beloved family.

His over 200 screen credits ranged from appearances in Doctor Who and Star Trek to voicing the title role in Disney film The Great Mouse Detective.

Asked in a recent interview with the Palm Beach Post what he would do if he had just six months left to live, he answered: "I would spend half the time with my dear wife, who has been very neglected for all the showbiz, and then I’d stand on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company acting out every leading part in the 36 plays and then die on stage."

Barrie Ingham died in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and is survived by his wife Tarne, four children and eight grandchildren.
