Ivo van Hove's production of Antigone starring Juliette Binoche will be broadcast on BBC Four this Spring as part of its The Age of Heroes: Ancient Greece Uncovered season.

BBC Four cameras will record the production, which opens tonight at the Barbican Theatre and has a new translation by poet Anne Carson. The broadcast date is to be announced.

Antigone will run at the Barbican until 28 March, before embarking on an international tour.

It sees Binoche, who is an Oscar-winner for The English Patient, return to the Barbican following her 2012 performance in Mademoiselle Julie.

The rest of the cast comprises Obi Abili, Kirsty Bushell, Samuel Edward-Cook, Finbar Lynch, Patrick O’Kane and Kathryn Pogson.

Head of theatre at the Barbican, Toni Racklin, said: "This has been a unique collaboration, with both organisations working closely together to realise two visions of the production – on stage and on screen. This ground-breaking collaboration means that the production will reach an even wider audience, supporting our mission to inspire more people to discover and love the arts."

The Age of Heroes season will also feature programmes on Greek art, sculpture, philosphy and poetry with contributors including The Apprentice's Margaret Mountford, classicist Natalie Haynes and art historian Alastair Sooke.
