Young Vic announces 2014 studio season
Artistic director David Lan has today announced the upcoming season in the Young Vic's studio spaces, the Maria and the Clare.
In the Maria, the larger of the two spaces, Matthew Xia's production of Athol Fugard's Sizwe Banzi is Dead will run from 13 February to 1 March 2014 (previews from 6 February), having had a sold-out run in the Clare earlier this year.
Next in the season will be Oh My Sweet Land, running from 14 April to 3 May 2014 (previews from 9 April). Conceived and performed by international actor Corinne Jaber, and written/directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi, it's a new play about everyday life in war-torn Syria.
Belarus Free Theatre are returning to the Young Vic next year, following their Trash Cuisine earlier this year and Minsk in 2011, with Red Forest, a "modern-day global epic". Part of the 2014 LIFT Festival, it runs in the Maria from 20 June to 5 July (previews from 12 June) and offers a reminder of the vulnerability of all of humankind.
Finally, the Clare will play host to Safe House, an installation from Jeremy Herbert and Gabriella Sonabend. Running from 26 April to 17 May 2014, it's an individual experience "inviting the audience into the most fragile human moments".
Lan commented on the season: "The spring 2014 studio shows tell stories of real people behind the headlines from all over the world: Syria, South Africa, Belarus, India, Brazil … Stories that remind us – as Bertrand Russell put it – to ‘remember your humanity and forget everything else'."
