Fiona Shaw stars in UK premiere of The Testament of Mary at Barbican next year

Fiona Shaw will star in the UK premiere of The Testament of Mary as part of the Barbican's 2014 spring/summer season.

Deborah Warner's production, which ran on Broadway earlier this year, features Shaw as the Virgin Mary, struggling with the loss of her son and the events leading up to his death. Running from 1-25 May 2014, the play is adapted by Colm Tóibín from his novel.

Deborah Warner said: “The Barbican stage feels a very natural home for The Testament of Mary and it will be wonderful to introduce this work and Fiona’s astonishing performance to the London audience.”

The season also features the revival of two productions from award-winning theatre company Cheek by Jowl, who is an artistic associate of the Barbican.

John Ford's ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore will return to the venue from 9-26 April 2014 following an original run in 2012, and Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry will run from 18-22 June 2014.

The season also includes Inner Voices, a black comedy from Italian playwright Eduardo De Filippo, highlighting the corruption of human relationships in the aftermath of the Second World War. Directed by and starring Toni Servillo, (The Great Beauty, Il Divo), it runs from 26-29 March 2014.

Digital creativity is explored in the main Theatre, with Kiss & Cry, a performance mixing digital technology and dance, from 25-28 June 2014, and Zero Point by Darren Johnston on 8 March 2014.

In the Pit, English National Ballet will stage a series of works choreographed by company members responding to the Great War.

New Yorker Young Jean Lee will bring her show The Shipment to the theatre from 10-14 June 2014, and the season will also see German performance colllective She She Pop performing Testament from 3-7 June 2014.
