TMA Announces Theatre Awards Dance Shortlist

The Theatrical Management Association (TMA) has announced the nominations for its annual Theatre Awards, including the three companies in its ‘Achievement in Dance’ category.

Birmingham Royal Ballet is nominated for its Pomp and Circumstances mixed bill that includes George Balanchine’s Serenade, Frederick Ashton’s Enigma Variations, and ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café by BRB director David Bintley.

English National Ballet is included in this year’s nominations for what the TMA describe as a “new strength and interpretative skills” among all its dancers, while Rambert Dance Company’s production of Hush by its former director Christopher Bruce has earned it a place on the shortlist.

Both BRB and ENB are big-scale ballet troupes, which perform fully staged dance-dramas and tour with large orchestras. Rambert is smaller and features a contemporary repertory, but it also tours extensively and performs to live music. All three troupes have significant national and international commitments and aim to reach a broad audience with a mix of popular and more challenging work.
