Barbican Renews Contract With Michale Clark

Michael Clark will continue as an Artistic Associate at the Barbican for a further three years, it has been announced. The British choreographer, who is usually dubbed the “bad boy” for his propensity to shock audiences, trained at the Royal Ballet School in the 1970s and danced with Rambert before forming his own troupe in the early 1980s. Clark has since won acclaim and criticism in equal measure for his innovative and often controversial approach to dance making and stage design.

His company, the Michael Clark Company first became an Artistic Associate at the Barbican in 2005, creating a trilogy of works to dance scores by Igor Stravinsky over the following three years.

As part of this month’s Dance Umbrella, Clark’s latest piece will be performed at the Barbican Theatre and will feature music by Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Lou Reed. Clark’s continuing association with the Barbican gives him a London home without which the choreographer would lack a base for his work and dancers.
