The Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park has announced that its acclaimed staging of To Kill a Mockingbird, which proved a hit at the outdoor venue earlier this year, will return next summer.

The production will play a limited run from 28 August to 13 September 2014, before embarking on a UK tour.

Directed by Open Air Theatre artistic director Timothy Sheader, To Kill a Mockingbird is adapted by Christopher Sergel from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel.

It opened the theatre’s 2013 season, with Robert Sean Leonard (Dead Poets Society, House) in the lead role of Atticus Finch.

It has not been confirmed if Leonard will return next year.

The Open Air Theatre has enjoyed a record summer, boosted by the good weather.

The venue has reported that over 180,000 people have attended performances so far this year – an increase of 40,000 on the previous highest attended season in 2011.

Due to demand the current production of The Sound of Music featuring Charlotte Wakefield as Maria and Michael Xavier as Captain Von Trapp has been extended to 14 September.

The UK tour of To Kill a Mockingbird is produced by Regent’s Park Theatre Ltd, Fiery Angel, Adam Spiegel and William Village. Dates are still to be announced.
