Profumo The Musical premieres at Waterloo East

Profumo The Musical runs from 28 to 31 August and centres on Christine Keeler, the model at the centre of the 1963 affair.

Written by actor/musician Gordon Kenney and directed by Matthew Lloyd Davies, it features “an array of original rock/pop songs” performed by a cast led by West End and television veteran Michael Howe, who plays Stephen Ward.

According to press material, “Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the infamous Profumo Affair, Profumo The Musical tells of the scandalous love affair between married Minister For War John Profumo and teenage good time girl Christine Keeler; and how young Christine, together with her friend Mandy Rice Davies and famed London Society osteopath Stephen Ward, unwittingly formed the catalyst that brought the establishment to its knees and lead to the eventual downfall of Macmillan’s government.”

Lloyd Webber’s musical Stephen Ward, which features lyrics by Don Black (Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard) and a book by playwright Christopher Hampton, opens at the Aldwych Theatre on 19 December 2013 (previews from 3 December).
