Rupert Grint, Brendan Coyle, Ben Whishaw and Daniel Mays star in Mojo revival

As previously rumoured, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint will make his stage debut in a revival of Jez Butterworth‘s play Mojo later this year.

Grint will star alongside Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Hamlet) and Daniel Mays (Trelawny of the Wells, Mrs Biggs) in the production.

Produced by Sonia Friedman, Mojo will start previews at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 26 October 2013.

Ian Rickson, who directed the original 1995 production at the Royal Court, will helm the all-star revival, which will be designed by Ultz.

Rickson told the Daily Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye: “I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley. There’s something ordinary and centred about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness.”

Butterworth’s play, which originally starred Tom Hollander, Aidan Gillen and Andy Serkis, is set in a 1950’s Soho club and follows a rock singer with star potential who gets caught up in the seedy underworld of the club.

Grint, who rose to fame as Ron Weasley in the Potter films, has been cast to play Sweets, an amphetamine-addicted petty criminal.

He follows his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe onto the London stage – Radcliffe is currently starring in The Cripple of Inishmaan, having previously appeared in Equus.

Brendan Coyle will return to the stage after a gap due to his Downton Abbey commitments. An accomplished stage actor, he won an Olivier Award in 1999 for Conor McPherson’s The Weir (the Donmar’s recent revival of which is transferring to the West End in January).

Ben Whishaw rose to prominence after starring in Trevor Nunn‘s acclaimed Old Vic production of Hamlet directly out of drama school. He has since appeared on stage in Mike Bartlett’s Cock at the Royal Court and, most recently, Peter and Alice opposite Judi Dench in the West End.

Daniel Mays recently appeared in Joe Wright’s production of Trelawny of the Wells at the Donmar and is about to return to the venue to star in Nick Payne‘s new play The Same Deep Water as Me (look out for our interview with Mays and Payne in the coming days).

Tickets for Mojo will be released for general sale in September 2013.
