Five Reasons to See… Grassroots Shakespeare’s new season

Grassroots Shakespeare have brought their “Summer of Love” season to the Old Red Lion Theatre, featuring Romeo and Juliet and Love’s Labour’s Lost. It runs until 27 July 2013. Here the company give us five reasons to go…

1. Exciting Top New Talent
Grassroots works hard to source the top, new, young British talent, who will be future stars. Producer Siobhan Daly personally reads every application, usually around 600 per show, before putting the shortlist through three rounds of auditions to find the final ensemble of 12. See them now before they’re taking over the West End and Broadway!

2. Shakespearean Original Practices – No Director!
Grassroots explores Shakespeare’s original theatrical practices and what always surprises people most is that the ensemble, like Shakespeare’s own actors, work collaboratively without a director. They devise all their own shows, share props and costumes, and bring a huge amount of creativity to the productions. They don’t rely on someone else’s vision but work together to create their own.

3. Innovative, Fresh Productions
Every Grassroots production is a one-off as each ensemble will devise their shows from scratch. This means you’ll never see a tired old production wheeled out yet again. What you will see is lots of artistry, powerful youthful energy and rigorous text work. This will be the first time these productions are ever seen in London, and once the run finishes, they won’t be revived. See them now before it’s too late!

4. Fun, Accessible & Affordable Entertainment
Many people don’t equate Shakespeare but with a good time, but with excellent actors who understand the text, Grassroots always manage to communicate the shows, along with their fun, humour and often very bawdy comedy! Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s funniest tragedies and Love’s Labour’s Lost is hilarious. In the hands of the rights actors, this equates to a great night out! Grassroots is commited to creating accessible and understandable performances that anyone can enjoy and come along to, while keeping ticket prices as low as possible!

5. Support a 5 Star New Company!
This is a talented and vibrant young company which has already performed at the RSC as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, received two Off West End Award 2012 nominations for Best Ensemble and Best Production – against much bigger and well-established theatres, produced a sell-out Christmas season with 5 star reviews and is hugely excited about bringing the Summer of Love to the Old Red Lion Theatre.
