When the lead actor of a musical gets injured during the interval of a performance, the show often can't go on. But not at Hampstead Theatre, where such a situation occurred during Saturday's matinee of Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon.

Actor John Dagleish, who played the role of Kinks lead singer Ray Davies in the show, was injured following an accident during the interval and had to go to A&E.

But instead of cancelling the second half, the rest of the cast performed an impromptu concert of songs from Act Two, including Kinks classics "Waterloo Sunset", "Thank You For the Days" and "Lola".

George Maguire, who played Dave, took over Dagleish's parts for the performance while cast members danced with the audience in the aisles.

The production, which finished its run in Hampstead on Saturday, carried on with its final performance in the evening, with Dagleish returning from casualty to close the show.

An audience member in attendance at the matinee told WhatsOnStage: "It was obviously disappointing when we heard about the injury, but we had a great time thanks to the efforts of the remaining cast. Everyone was on their feet, dancing and singing along!"
