New cast including Josefina Gabrielle announced for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

As Sam Mendes’ production celebrates seven Olivier Award nominations, new cast members have been announced

On the same day that record-breaking musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory garnered seven Olivier Award nominations, new cast members including Josefina Gabrielle and Richard Dempsey have been unveiled.

Joining the previously announced Alex Jennings as Willy Wonka from 19 May 2014 will be Barry James as Grandpa Joe, Josefina Gabrielle as Mrs Teavee, Richard Dempsey and Kirsty Malpass as Mr and Mrs Bucket.

Sam Mendes' production opened at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in May 2013 and is adapted from Roald Dahl's classic children's story by David Greig. It features the film's best known song "Pure Imagination", plus a host of new music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Barry James' theatre credits include The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Little Shop of Horrors (West End). Josefina Gabrielle, who was today nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Merrily We Roll Along has other stage credits including Two Into One (Menier Chocolate Factory), Puss in Boots (Hackney Empire), Me and My Girl (Sheffield Crucible) and Sweet Charity (Menier Chocolate Factory/West End).

Richard Dempsey's stage credits include A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Merchant of Venice (World Tour) and Dirty Dancing (West End). Kirsty Malpass has theatre credits including Jerry Springer the Opera, Lord of the Rings (West End) and Stroke of Luck (Park Theatre).

Clive Carter (Mr Salt), Jasna Ivir (Mrs Gloop), Paul J Medford (Mr Beauregarde), Billy Boyle (Grandpa George), Roni Page (Grandma Josephine) and Myra Sands (Grandma Georgina) will all remain in the cast.

New ensemble members include: Dan Cooke, Divine Cresswell, Connor Dowling, Gemma Fuller, Robert Jones, Matthew Rowland, Rebecca Seale, Gregory Sims, Paulo Teixeira and Laura Tyrer, with further casting to be announced.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is currently booking at Theatre Royal Drury Lane until 30 May 2015.
