Barbican Announces 2010-2011 Highlights

The Barbican has confirmed the remainder of its 2010 dance and performance season and announced the highlights of its 2011 programme. This features several high-profile dance productions including the last work by the renowned American choreographer Merce Cunningham who died last July.

First comes Michael Clark in June with the latest instalment of his come, been and gone series. The British choreographer has been attached to the Barbican since 2005, with the venue providing the base for him to showcase new work.

Later in June the Brazilian contemporary dance maker Deborah Colker brings her athletic company to London. A regular visitor in the early 2000s, Colker mixes gymnastic-style moves with music ranging from Mozart to modern-day drum and bass.

In July, the Barbican hands over to its hop-hop associates Boy Blue Entertainment. First comes performances by its youth troupe Da Bratz, then a new full-length hip-hop show entitled Over the Edge from the main company. Also in July, the Barbican screens the new British 3D film Street Dance, whose plot pitches street dancers against classical ballerinas. The film stars the Britain’s Got Talent crews Diversity and Flawless, as well as veteran actors Charlotte Rampling and Eleanor Bron.

Then in October, the Merce Cunningham company performs Nearly Ninety, the choreographer’s last piece which premiered on his 90th birthday in April 2009. Cunningham died three months later.
