An American in Paris to close in the West End
The musical adaptation of An American in Paris is to close at the Dominion Theatre in London. The show first opened in Paris in 2014 before opening on Broadway in 2015 and subsequently transferred to the West End earlier this year.
The show is directed and choreographed by British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and is inspired by the 1951 film starring Gene Kelly. It features the songs of George and Ira Gershwin such as "I Got Rhythm", "‘S Wonderful" and "I’ll Build a Stairway To Paradise". The book is written by Craig Lucas.
The musical follows an American GI in Paris as he discovers the city and falls in love with a young dancer. The current cast includes Ashley Day as Jerry Mulligan, Leanne Cope as Lise Dassin and Haydn Oakley as Henri Baurel.
An American in Paris won four Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards in New York. The London production, with the original cast, has been filmed for broadcast in cinemas. The show is also currently on a US tour.
The final date for the London run is 6 January 2018.
In her five-star review for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton said the production was 'unlike any other musical on the London stage: sumptuously beautiful and heartfelt.'
An American in Paris runs at the Dominion Theatre until 6 January 2018.
