Eric and Little Ern (Tour – Liverpool)

Janie Phillips travels back in time to the golden comedy era of Morecambe and Wise and loves it.

Following on from their successful run at this years Edinburgh Festival, actors Ian Ashpitel and Jonty Stephens continue to wow audiences across the country with their tribute to Morecambe and Wise in Eric and Little Ern.

By incorporating some of their own material around already existing scripts, they have produced a very funny and beautifully told story.

The first half is set in a hospital near Slough, where Ernie is recovering from a heart attack, and is where the story of how the pair meet and get into show business is told. This is their warm up act, where the funny Eric and the straight man Ern, show their more tender sides, how they feel about each other and their partnership are revealed and they look back on their careers.

The second half is their full on routine, standing on the apron in front of the red curtain. From the brown paper bag trick to Eric's Hamlet, these two did not stop and were awarded with a standing ovation and applause to their finale "Bring me Sunshine."

Ashpitel and Stephens definitely look the part, down to their mannerisms, facial expressions, and movements. There is a certain musicality to the delivery of these lines, not only have they got to be slick and in tune with each other, but the timing of the laughs have to be just right.

These two have worked on the idea of performing as Eric and Ern since 2012, and it is clear how much time and research has been put into the act, their mimicry, mannerisms and voices resemble the pair beautifully.

It is an actors greatest challenge when portraying someone as well loved, and respected as Morecambe and Wise were and still continue to be, so hats off to a truly remarkable performance by Ashpitel and Stephens.

Eric and Little Ern is at the Epstein until 11 October and is touring the UK.
