Bouncers (Liverpool)

The hilarious play Bouncers comes to the Royal Court Theatre, bringing laughs and jokes to Liverpool this summer. Set in the 80’s, the four tough men show the many sides to being a bouncer, the sights, the drunken characters and the weekend rituals audiences will all recognise.

Typically of John Godber’s work, the characters switch rapidly, taking on many roles which although at first is a little confusing, quickly becomes very entertaining and helps develop the story. Bouncers is set in Liverpool and although there are many local references, the laughs are great and throughout.

Michael Starke returns to the Royal Court for this production and again steals the limelight through hysterical facial expressions and cheeky humour. Paul Broughton also returns as the older bouncer with a big heart and a deep history. Despite the laughs, audiences are also introduced to a darker side of this occupation and the disturbing scenes they witness on a daily occurrence.

Among the many characters played, Danny O’Brien proves he is able to adapt and fulfil a number of roles, including the tipsy birthday girl and a ready to go hard man. Mark Womack seems shy but brings a strong presence as the cast come together, bringing an electric chemistry to the stage.

Beverley Norris-Edmonds brings eccentric choreography to the entire play as we see constant changes within body movements and several dancing routines which gave the play a real twist. The audience cannot get enough as enjoyment can be heard through the whole performance and on the night I attended, a standing ovation was so rightly given at the end.

With cheeky jokes for all senses of humour, Bouncers is a fantastic show which can be highly recommended for a good night out.
