Evita (Tour – Liverpool)

Liverpool welcomes the touring production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita. Featuring a wealth of hits including the iconic “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” and “Oh What A Circus”, this award winning show introduces the Argentine political leader Eva Peron from childhood, and we see her journey, rising to fame, gaining power and useful contacts to become the people’s leader.

[[image:81166]]Madalena Alberto gives an extraordinary performance in the title role, allowing her powerful and amazingly strong voice to take control, symbolising her character’s commanding authority and influence over Argentina. Her body language is dominant as she welcomes audiences into her treasured persona, standing out from the other bodies on stage throughout the show.

Marti Pellow joins the cast as Che, the narrator, after completing a similar role in the recent Blood Brothers tour. Whilst his presence is worthy, his speech is a little hard to hear over the live orchestra conducted with sheer ease by Matthew Loughran.

The performances are believable but it is not always clear what is taking place on stage until the narration is given. Evita is very entertaining with strong performances throughout however it’s a tad slow at times. The choreography by Bill Deamer is wonderful and the staging from Matthew Wright is simple but very effective.
