Shrek the Musical is to embark on a new UK tour.

David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori's musical adaptation is based on an original book by William Steig and the film starring Mike Myers as the big green ogre.

Originally directed in the West End by Rob Ashford and Jason Moore, Nigel Harman took over for the original UK and Ireland tour and it is his production that embarks on the second tour.

The musical is set in a fantasy land where Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey set out on a quest to save Princess Fiona from a dragon.

Harman said: "I had so much fun directing the original UK & Ireland Tour that I jumped at the chance to work on it again… It’s certainly become one of the classic family musicals of all time and I’m really proud to be a part of it."

The tour sets off from Edinburgh Playhouse 12 December and then visits Palace Theatre Manchester, Sunderland Empire, Birmingham Alexandra Theatre, His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen, Northampton Royal and Derngate, Stoke Regent Theatre and Blackpool Winter Garden. Further dates will be announced.
