This musical was a smash Broadway hit in '78. The plot is based on the true story of a Texan TV muckraker named Marvin Zindler, who forces embarrassed politicians to close down the legendary La Grange brothel, in business since the 1800's The brothel, known to all as 'The Chicken Ranch' received its title letting poor farmers pay for their pleasure with poultry instead of cash! Saucy, raunchy and great fun, with take-home showstoppers to heartwrenching tear-jerkers.
With additional support from the National Theatre Studio, BAC, Live at LICA, Nuffield Theatre (Southampton), The Point (Eastleigh). A SPILL Commission, presented in partnership with the New Wolsey Theatre.
It's 1963, and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura's hit single Dreamboats and Petticoats has not taken off. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss - and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy... The advent of the Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom - Norman to "get off the drains" and find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act!? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit, charm, and great songs as Dreamboats and Petticoats.
Twenty-five years ago a group of friends celebrated the end of their university careers with a wild week in a barn half-way up a mountain in West Wales. A week of madness, mayhem and music, recorded on a C90 cassette and buried in a biscuit tin at the top of a hill with a pledge - "Wherever we are in twenty-five years' time we'll come back here on Midsummer's Eve and create the B side". And now we see those old friends return, a little rounder, a bit more rueful but with their passion for life, love and music still smouldering inside. As the biscuit tin gives up its secrets, old passions catch fire, past resentments return and the songs begin to fly. Will this reunion change their lives? Will the album ever be finished? And what on earth can they play that cassette on?
This musical is a celebration of friendship, survival and the power of song, written especially for a company of multi-skilled actor-musicians in the New Wolsey house style; with music like the ballads of Joni Mitchell and the summer feel good fun of Mumford and Sons.
