WOS Radio: Edward Seckerson Talks to ENO's Castor & Pollux Team

Date: 26 October 2011

It's an English National Opera first - a Rameau opera - but given that Rameau was himself 50 when he embarked upon his wondrous adventures in the genre I think the late arrival is entirely in keeping.

Castor & Pollux is regarded as one of his finest scores, a work, according to director BARRIE KOSKY (making his ENO debut) and music director CHRISTIAN CURNYN, pervaded by melancholia and loss.

In this exclusive audio podcast the pair share their thoughts on the piece with EDWARD SECKERSON and whet the appetite for a staging which Kosky describes as the total antithesis of French Baroque extravagance. Expect no big frocks, wigs, or indeed frou-frou of any kind.

Kosky, a plain-speaking and provocative Australian, is soon set to take over the Komische Oper in Berlin, long-term home of the cutting edge in music theatre. His kind of theatre is without boundaries and very much centred on a process of exploration in the rehearsal room. His ENO cast is led by Allan Clayton and Roderick Williams as the brothers whose mutual devotion also knows no bounds.
