Five Reasons to See ... Persephone Lewin’s Comedy Cabaret

Date: 8 August 2010

Persephone Lewin is the star of Persephone’s Comedy Cabaret which features a penguin playing the trumpet and other fascinating acts. The performer is most remembered for her television audition for Britain’s Got Talent 2010 where she famously exhibited her penguin in front of a large studio audience.

1. You can see a trumpet playing penguin

It’s a big chance to see Freddy the penguin; the star trumpeter, who is an impresario for matters striptease and burlesque, plus he helps dance the Cancan.

2. You can have a try on a trumpet

If you’ve always wanted a blow of a trumpet, blast down the walls of Jericho, you can ask Persephone for a go after the show.

3. You can see one of the acts who auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent again!

Persephone was contacted by ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in 2010 and played at the Apollo where she made it through to the third round and performed in front of a packed studio audience. The judges gave positive comments, including Piers Morgan who found her act “thoroughly entertaining”, and Amanda Holden, who thought that her trumpet playing penguin was “what this show is all about.”

4. There is lots of tassel twirling

The show involves a blend of stand-up, dance, visual gags and music. This beautifully costumed comic delight appeals to all ages. As for tassel twirling – who says you can’t have motorized tassels!

5. Her unusual CV should say it all!

Persephone matched injuries on victims of murder to weapons by day and was a part time comedian by night. Now it’s comedy full time.

As a teenager Persephone trained at RADA. After two years cutting her teeth on the London stand-up circuit she was starting to headline at the smaller clubs when she had a year and a half off for promotion of her book Bite to Byte.

She came third in the first round of The Laughing Horse competition 2004, made a pilot for Channel 4 with Russell Brand in 2005, hosting her own show, Crackpots, in 2007. In 2008 she was chosen for Cheese and Crackers cabaret competition - best eight performers from the past five years - basement Leicester Square Theatre.

Persephone Lewin’s Comedy Cabaret is at Augustines the Vault, 7-22 August at various times.
