starstarstarstarBizarre, barmy plot but staged wonderfully with some excellent performances not least from the fabulous Betty Buckley. What a treat - Paul Wallis15 Mar 13
starstarstarstarstarMy faith has been restored in musical theatre this afternoon when I saw this superb production of Dear World. Wonderful cast lead by the great Betty Buckley and Paul Nicholas. A sheer joy to watch the entire cast and I do recommend all to see this production before it closes on 30th March. There are memorable songs and tunes too and Gillian Lynne has worked wonders on this small stage with such a large cast of talented actors. Any true lover of musical theatre will find this production wonderful. So much better than a certain a new musical playing at the P.O.W. theatre that can only rely on swear words to get a laugh. - ILs09 Mar 13
starstarThis is incredibly well staged, and it is worth seeing for that alone on the tiny stage at the Charing Cross Theatre, but the show itself is weak, the music fogettable and full of cliches to the extent it is painful at times. From the wise but mute mime artiste, the dotty old women, the camp waiter, the two youngesters who fall in love... It would be ok if the songs were any good - but they aren't! A good effort, let down by a poor show. - Ed24 Feb 13
starstarBe aware that Betty Buckley is already missing performances, have she and Paul Nicholas come to some kind of arrangement? It is a disgrace that a show which has been sold on her name is having understudies going on less than a week after the reviews are in, and the understudy is 30 years too young and not on top of her lines.Make sure that La Buckley is deigning to perform!!! This weak show without her is not worth it, presumably Jerry Herman thought he was doing a Sondheim, he was not!!! - ST21 Feb 13
starstarstarNot the greatest musical, and I agree that it starts shakily, but it's worth seeing for Betty Buckley! Fabulous - and she's given some belters! - Ian19 Feb 13
starstarstarstarYou'll find an endearing, wonderfully performed musical here. Betty Buckley's performance is nothing short of a tour-de-force, an effortless and perfectly truthful performance. Grab a ticket! - Phil16 Feb 13
starstarstarstarstarThis production is a great deal of fun. Gillian Lynne has spun gold from thin air. Betty Buckley is her usual sensational self, creating a showstopper from each number she sings. She is supported by a very able cast ncluding the wonderful Annabel Leventon. I hope this gets recorded so everybody can enjoy this wonderful Jerry Herman score sung by the legendary Betty. - L15 Feb 13
starstarstarstarstarPerhaps over 40 years ago with the incredible success rightly bestowed upon Jerry Herman and Angela Lansbury the most obvious production for DEAR WORLD was a big Broadway one and the temptation to anything less was not an option? Sadly Broadway history is there to remind us that even with those considerable talents a 'flop' can indeed follow. Forty four years later and making its London premiere this musical may sadly face a similar fate and if that happens a great injustice will have been done to this beautifully realised musical. In the astonish capable hands of Gillian Lynne and an incredible award winning team behind her, Herman's DEAR WORLD is no longer seeking to be a blockbuster musical. Instead the clutter of the original book has been replaced with a more fluid one. The original song order has been changed, some songs removed and replaced with new ones from Herman's 'trunk' and the reconceived version is now what it should have been 44 years ago - a chamber musical. To make it work you need a leading lady who can act the part with a glorious appealing and believable eccenticism. A voice which will lead those glorious company numbers with convincing power and authority, and then sing the ballads with a fragility and tenderness which unbearably moves you - and for clearly only one choice Betty Buckley. The charm she alludes as the Countess flows from the stage and watch the expressions of the cast as their joy of working with her is obvious for all to see. A Broadway musical now exquisitely a musical which has at last found the production which has eluded it and the standing ovation at the performance I attended was a testament to the musical it now is. - Eoghan15 Feb 13
starstarstarstarstarAfter an odd start this becomes the most charming, delightful and (yes) whimsical joy to watch. Betty B is stunning and supported by a strong cast - special mention must go to her "mad" friends - not forgetting Dickie! - Ed15 Feb 13
starstarstarstarstarFantastic! Worth every minute! Great evening. Thank you Annabel Leventon for inviting us to the show. - Denise15 Feb 13
starstarstarstarstarWorld-class performance from Betty Buckley who has one of the great musical theatre voices and who acts with subtlety, charm and power. She engages you and draws you into the character and the play. Betty is also very generous with the other performers, giving the whole evening a real company feel. Not everything about the piece works but Gillian Lynne delivers a must-see production of a charming chamber musical that will move you, make you smile and on many occasions (due to the hilarious work of Annabel Leventon) make you laugh out loud. Go and see how musicals should be staged and performed. - StuC10 Feb 13
starstarstarstarSuch a Lovely show.Betty Buckley was amazing and proved her status as a legend. She gave real emotion to the role of the countess,so moving.Unfortunately Paul Nicholas was off sick but his understudy(Craig Nicholls)filled his shoes perfectly. All in all a very enjoyable evening..Also worth a mention are Rebecca Lock and Annabel Leventon who are hilarious as Gabrielle and Constance.. - GJ10 Feb 13
