Kiss Me Kate is probably my favourite of the older 'classical' musicals and this Chichester production does it full justice. The last revival was a much praised Brodway transfer but this might be even better. Predictably Trevor Nunn has taken great care over the mock Shakespearean scenes which emphasises the parallels between the actors and their characters. Gareth Valentine provides terrific musical direction and Stephen Mears has choreographed a couple of superb showcases for a superb ensemble. Adam Garcia is underused but does get one chance to display his unbelievable tap skills in one great routine and Too Darn Hot builds from a langorous start to a fantastic climax. The biggest improvement on the last revival is the genuine chemistry between the two leads. Alex Bourne is a new name to me but he proves to be the ideal leading man for the astounding Hannah Waddingham who offers a virtuoso demonstration of her vocal range and acting skills as Lilli / Kate. If this is her farewell to London before she leaves for Australia she couldn't go with a better reminder of her enviable talent and in a show that showcases it to the full. - David Baxter

Great Dance Numbers, Great Staging, Great Costumes but along with this I found the Lead Male (The understudy tonight I think) not very good which made the show drag. Although I enjoyed myself I was glad when it finished. There are better shows to be enjoyed in London's theatre land. - Peter Roberts

I went on New Year's Eve. Music - band and singing - good, as was some of the dancing. Unfortunately, it was also a charisma free zone with no sense of any relationship or chemistry between any of the characters. This made it a long, long nearly three hours. - Martin Skelton

What a show to watch on New years Eve--brilliant way to end the year. When you have a great cast, it is bliss and this show is professional all the way through--great songs and wonderful performances from Hannah Wadddingham (she is becoming a top West End Star), Alex Bourne, Holly Dale Spencerand Adam Garcia. Special mention to David Burt and Clive Rowe in their show stoping routines. Also loved Wendy Mae Brown and of course the great Jason Pennycooke (last saw him at Meniers La Cage Aux Faulles. A must see show and entertaining from beginning to end. - Joe Spiteri

We saw it last night, were greeted with a sign saying Hannah Waddingham was sick, but her understudy, Carolyn Maitland was excellent- I suspect not quite as full voiced as Ms W, but pretty feisty. Have to say I'm a huge fan of the film and have seen it on stage before as well, but I agree with other reviewers that this was a pretty good effort. Too Darn Hot was a real showstopper, and I thought Alex Bourne was great as Fred. Might well make the effort to go again late in the run. - Sarahr

Agree entirely - a real belter of a show - came out feeling thoroughly entertained and wanting to pop back to see it again: a rarity for me. - OH

I do so agree with this review! I saw the show on Saturday afternoon and it positively sizzled with energy. The voices were superb, particularly Hannah, Alex and Wendy Mae Brown. My birthday treat to myself - terrific! - Patricia White
