Peter Brook’s edited minimalist A Magic Flute was a bit of a damp squib. Even though it ran for around half the normal time, it seemed a very long 95 minutes. There were some nice humourous touches, some clever staging and some nice - if 'small' - voices, but overall it underwhelmed. In short, no magic! - Gareth James

I was really put off by poor reviews - in fact my husband vetoed turning up altogether despite having a ticket. With low expectations I was very plesantly surprised. AQ very simple but effective set set off good acting and much better voices than I had been led to expect by the reviewers.
I was charmed by the whole thing - perhaps not being a purist (or a snob?!) I wasn't put off by the score and plot being hacked about a bit. - Gill

I saw the production on Weds 23rd March and feel that the production had a simplicity which I liked. All the voices were good, in fact, I enjoyed this production more than Die Zauberflote at the Royal Opera House earlier this year. - MaggieG
