starstarstarstarstarThis is, in my view, the greatest opera of the 20th century and this is a production it richly deserved. The orchestra and chorus under Edward Gardner were electrifying and have never sounded better. In a terrific British cast, John Daszak was a fine Peter with particularly stunning support from Felicity Palmer’s Mrs Sedley, Matthew Best’s Swallow, Gerald Finley’s Balstrode and Amanda Roocroft’s Ellen. This is one of the best things the ENO have ever done and it’s great to see this recently troubled company on such a roll. - Gareth James31 May 09
starstarstarstarThis was my first onstage encounter with Peter Grimes and I must say I was impressed. The staging of this production was superb lending to the dark feel of the piece. I was in a seat which had no view of the surtitles which was occasionally frustrating as it was sometime difficult to totally understand what was being sung. But the strength of the piece gave a clear steer to what was unfolding. A special word must go to the two leads. Amanda Roocroft gave a gentle, emotional peformance as Ellen while Stuart Skelton's Grimes was at times mesmerising as he sank further into the mire, haunted by the past. The final scene before he totally unravelled before heading out to sea for the last time was brilliantly played. At times mesmerising, this is a fine production. - Paul Wallis21 May 09
