starstarstarstarFAR to long, and some of the staging was odd, but easily one of Adams best operas. He really gets under the skin of the subject and the music makes you (well.. made me) feel physiologicaly sick. - Suttox30 Mar 09
starstarstarThis would have been a much better opera if he'd cut it by 30 mins (especially in the more static first half). I liked the design and staging, the music is accessible and there are some very good performances (though Gerald Finley's understudy didn't really cut it and looked so young!) but it's a case of more is less. - Gareth James13 Mar 09
starstarstarstarstarOne of the most powerful operatic experiences I have ever had. One would not think that a viable opera could be made out of such seemingly prosaic material as the first atomic bomb blast, but Adams manages it with genius. The orchestral writing is superb throughout and, for me, is the dominant element in the piece. Unfortunately, Gerald Finley was indisposed tonight and his place was taken by a courageous James Cleverton who, while technically sound, does not have Finley's charisma. The direction of Penny Woolcock and the set designs by Julian Crouch are faultless. Among the supporting singers, Meredith Arwady as Pasqualita and Brindley Sherratt as Teller were outstanding. The orchestra, under the young Lawrence Renes, excelled themselves, while the chorus shone in some exceedingly difficult passages. This is a work which deserves to remain in the repertoire and to be seen over and over again. It is a masterpiece. - sc05 Mar 09
