Tim Laurenti was playing Fagin (Griff Rhys Jones on holiday) and he was very good. A very believable Fagin, enough menace and did not overplay the comedy. Kerry Ellis was excellent, her singing and acting superb. Sometimes it was difficult to understand the children's dialogue and the seats were far too cramped. However overall a thoroughly enjoyable evening out and the show is recommended. - Jackie, Devon

We went on Boxing Day. Could there be more suitable seasonal fare? Child exploitation and abuse (with a whiff of pedophilia), robbery, murder and a hint of prostitution – perfect family entertainment! Lionel Bart was so under-rated in his lifetime and is most remembered for this show – if only we could get revivals of Blitz!, Maggie May, Fings Ain’t What They Used To Be…...This production is a little darker, and probably better for it, though Griff Rhys Jones lightens it a bit with his particular interpretation of Fagin. The people are proved right in their choice of Jodie Prenger as Nancy – she belts out her solo song with passion and has real empathy with the kids. But it’s the brilliant staging of the ensemble pieces that sweep you away with terrific choreography and a stage full of youthful enthusiasm. - Gareth James

When we got to the theater and found that Gwion would not be playing oliver and it was Francesco instead, we were all disapointed but he was amazing. The whole show was superb, however Francesco was outshone completely by Ross McCormack who stole the show for me his acting, dancing and singing skills were fantastic. I am only a year older and i dout anyone i know would be half as good as he was. I was so ready to book tickets to see him again and was almost in tears, along with the rest of tha audence and cast, when Jodie told us it was al the children's last performance. Can't wait to see him in something else, of if he does come back to oliver,I will be one of the first in line :) - Livia

Omid was utterly fantastic! the stage settings were amazing and a feast for the eyes. Felt Jodie was a very good Nancy. Dodger (Ross Mc Cormack) was a natural, little gang member was priceless (not sure of name). Overall a fantastic performance with Omid stealing the whole show well done !!!! Love to see it again. - Sarah Broxton

I had the great pleasure of seeing Omid a couple of weeks ago, and fully agree with the review. This is the third time I have seen this show and was not really bothered, but so glad I went along. The production is far more slicker than previously, but Omid easily steals the entire show, and easily the best Fagin I have seen as well. - Vincent Doherty

Have now seen this show twice and it's really great. An epic production on a fantastic stage which seems to go back miles - incredible perspective. Jodie was everything I expected of her when I voted for her every week. A lovely performance and I'm really looking forward to seeing her in another show - hopefully a great musical comedy. Really enjoyed Rowan's performance but having seen the repeat with Omid, I have to say he's totally brilliant. Omid is a true musical star - let's hope he does more of this as he's amazing - Avril

This is the definitive Oliver! Rupert Goold's sublime production fits perfectly into the vast Drury Lane theatre (Anthony Ward's towering sets looked a bit cramped at the Palladium) and the pitch is perfect - like the film, it is so joyous you leave the theatre on cloud 9 but retains the serious issues brought to the fore by Sam Mendes in the 1990's. Plus, Rowan Atkinson is the best Fagin. He adds a unique layer of zany theatricality to the role, including a John Cleese funny walk and a wonderful moment conversing with items from his illicit jewellery box. Moreover, Pocket or Two has never been more exciting. Jodie Prenger is sensational as Nancy, too. Her warmth shines throughout her scenes with the children and I've never heard As Long As He Needs Me better performed. A true star, indeed. Finally, at last, we have a Bill Sikes in Burn Gorman that is nasty enough to break out of the panto villain mode that the musical version of Dickens' classic usually casts. Everything about this show is superb(including some beautiful lighting in Fagin's den). A glittering night all round. - DJ

Being a big fan of the musical ‘Oliver’ and having seen the stage version twice before, I was really looking forward to seeing Rowan Atkinson’s portrayal of Fagin, however, Rowan Atkinson was indisposed (I found out afterwards this was due to a hernia), and I was surprised, but not disappointed to read that Fagin would now be played by Russ Abbot.
I was right not to be disappointed as Russ Abbot brought his own unique personality and humour to Fagin, without detracting from the other excellent portrayals I’ve seen (Ron Moody in the film’Oliver’, and Jim Dale and Gary Wilmot in the 1990’s stage versions.
Jodie Prenger (winner of BBC1’s ‘I’d do anything) played Nancy. I was really impressed with the power in her voice and noticed the tissues coming out around me to ‘As long as he needs me’!
The whole production was excellent with a fantastic cast of over 100, an excellent orchestra and really authentic scenery. I had to fight the urge to sing along and dance to the songs! Although the Dickens tale is actually quite a depressing one, I would defy anyone not to come out of the Drury Lane theatre feeling uplifted.

I saw this on 24th March 2009 and I really enjoyed it. We had a brand new Oliver called James Donaghey. It was his very first performance, but you would never have guessed, he was so good and professional. Burn Gorman was terrifying as Bill Sikes and Rowan Atkinson was hilarious as Fagin. I saw Oliver when the show first opened and Jodie as Nsancy had blown me away with her voice. This time though she seemed a little more reserved and didnt belt out her songs as much. her acting has really improved though and it was really good. Ross McCormack was the Dodger and i love him, its the 2nd time i've seen him and he is so cheeky and funny with the deliverance of his lines. Well done to the whole cast, thye really pulled it off and I cant wait to go and see it again - Kirsty

Visited London to see three shows and found this the most disappointin(this was nothing to do with the fact Jodie Prenger was indisposed,in fact I heard no-one else complaining about this either. Not impressed with Tamsin Carroll,I found her vocal weak and her charisma lacking. The majority of the audience had clearly gone to see Rowan Atkinson; the fact the character (and teddy bear) of Mr Bean filtered through seemed only to heighten their pleasure. Definitely not something I would get a 2nd ticket for. - mf

Thought the show was amazing!!Rowan was brilliant as fagin, and the artful dodger was fab...he definalty out shone oliver by a mile!jodie as nancy was outstanding, and her performance of 'As long as he needs me' was breathtaking! would recommend this show 100%! 10/10! - Abbey

I went along to see Oliver with great expectations, especially having seen Sam Mendes' excellent production in 1994 but I left the theatre quite dissapointed.
Maybe it was just an off night but it seemed very slow to get going and I got the impression that the majority of the actors were going through the motions in their parts and no more. It improved a little when the Artful Dodger appeared but not much and a young kid can't rescue a show like this. Our Oliver was weak. Maybe we shouldn't expect too much of the kids but we did in Billy Elliot and they always delivered. Lets face it this is a much less demanding part.
Rowan Atkinson certainly livened things up but I just didn't find his performance believeable. Where was the dark aspects of Fagin's character? There was too many flashes of Mr Bean. Yes there is humour in Fagin but not only that. We saw Tamsin Carroll as Nancy. I wasn't especially excited by her performance - the warmth of Nancy which Sally Dexter delievred all those years ago just wasn't there. But her rendition of "As Long as He Needs Me" was superb and the highlight of the evening. Burn Gorman lacked the menace that Bill Sikes must possess. I just didn't believe him.
So that's it, a show that promised much but delivered little. - Paul Wallis

Lionel Bart's music hall version of Oliver Twist may not be everyone's idea of Dickens but you can't help enjoying this big and exuberant musical. Anthony Ward's designs are astonishing, transforming semalessly from workhouse to the streets of London and Fagin's seedy unerground lair. Although much hs been made of the casting, Oliver! is very much a large ensemble piece, even if some of the minor characters are merely sketches. It was Gwion Jones turn to play an Oliver who was apparently abandoned in the Welsh valleys but, if his acting was unconvincing he sang sweetly, particularly on a moving Where is Love. Rowan Atkinson's Fagin was a bit like watching Mr. Bean play Shylock and he clearly could not face being disliked by the audience, but he proved an excellent comedian and made Reviewing the Situation one of the high points of the show. Jodie Prenger is certainly not a great actress, not even a good one, but it's difficult to understand why Lloyd Webber wanted a different type of Nancy as Jodie is clearly the people's idea of what Nancy should be. I have no idea what Rupert Goold has added to Sam Mendes' production (not much I'd guess) but this Oliver! is an undoubted crowd pleaser and it's great to see such a big and unashamedly enjoyable show in such a bleak winter. - David Baxter

well done to all the cast an excellent show,i was elated from start to finish,i knew all the songs and wanted to sing along.Don't know what some of these reviewers were watching, but obviously not the same production as me!
I was sad when it finished,no maybe Rowan is not a singer, but his performance was excellent, and he deserved a standing ovation(which sadly he never got)He did add his own elements to the character, which i thought personally were very funny(they were not over the top)and i would go and see it again. dodger, oliver and all the cast were excellent, and the scenery was amazing, never been to Drury Lane before, but i will look forward to going again.Nancy when she sang made the hairs go up on my neck, very moving performance.
we went to see it on my 50th birthday, and it was the best birthday i have had!well done to all! - sheila merritt

Performance 29th December ..Being an Oliver fanatic I can only say that I was not disappointed in any way. It was superb. Atkinson as Fagin scored a 20 out of 10. Kids were great, Dodger incredible. Nancy was good but could improve. Scenery Spectacular. Only point I would mention is that it seemed a little rushed at the beginning. All the same I will never forget the night, nor will my children. - Stephen Griffin

Row 18 Stalls. Tues 27th Jan 09. 19.30hrs. Thoroughly enjoyed this show. I only went because I saw "I'd do anything" and voted for Jodie. I know, how sad am I! This is a BIG production, the kids were just great. It all flowed seamlessly and the sound was good. The scenary also was well thought out and engaging. I wouldn't have expected anything less from one of Cameron's productions. Rowan was good, he portrayed Fagin well but can not sing, which was a let down. Jodie was just as she was on TV and has a great voice. She put her all into this and deserves the recognition for achieving this high standard. Go and see it, you won't regret it! - Dave Woolrich

Amazing production. Rowan Atkinson hammed it up slightly and was very Mr Beanish in parts. Jodie was fantastic but lacked emotional depth. The staging was brilliant and overall a very captivating show - SW
26 Jan 09
I gave the show 2 stars, not 3, so am submitting this again.
Disappointing. Either Rowan Atkinson has the confidence to play the role of Fagin or he has not. References to Mr Bean smack of desperation and make any attempt to accept him in the part very difficult. Jodie is obviously giving her best efforts but the variability of her performance shows her lack of professionalism.
The theatre was packed, which proves that cynisism pays off when putting a musical together, at least in the short term. Suspect that many of the audience will wait until another tv contest before they attend anything else. This wituation is better than leaving theatres dark but it is far from ideal.
Understand that performances are sold out for some time but can't believe the show will run on once the crowd generated by tv have been and gone.
Personally went out of curiosity and we all know what that did!

I cant understand all these bad reviews - perhaps they should go and watch Shakespeare instead, its a musical production and is supposed to be FUN for gods sake. We went as a family yesterday (myself, husband and daughters aged 17 and 7) and we all thought it was amazing. From start to finish, the music, the singing, the set and the whole atmosphere created a convincing story. Jodie was superb, as was Rowan Atkinson. I would definitely go to see this show again and would suggest that those who were disappointed stick to something a bit more serious!! - L Griffiths

It does exactly what it says on the tin. If you like singing bowl-cutted children and dogs on stage, you'll love it. If you like some intellectual or emotional relevance to the book you'll be disappointed. But, hell, it's Oliver! - what did you expect? - dgr

Went with high hopes, but was totally disappointed. A huge production, very lavish and amazing sets, but what happened to the drama? A few of the set pieces do register, like Food Glorious Food and Consider Yourself but the narrative gets lost in the staging. Jodie was particularly disappointing with voice no more than average (it seemed like she was losing it at Monday's performance) and Rowan Atkinson seemed to be putting in a "star performance" (not to my liking) and disconnected with the rest of the show. I guess the production sank under the weight of the whole enterprise, the only thing it left me longing for was to have seen Ron Moody and Georgia Brown in the original production. - LLKK

I have been to most of the performances & think the bloke who plays Fagin stands head & shoulders above the rest. Can I make special mention to the poster Cedric Hogarth - (is that your real name or do you use it as a joke). Ceddy baby, be cool, relax - try viagra or something. - R.A.

I went to the show last night (160109) and loved every minute of it! The sets, costumes, and choreography were wonderful. During the Ensemble numbers there was so much to see that I didn't know where to look. Gwion was a very sweet Oliver and sang very well. I felt that Jodie has proved her critics wrong and did a marvellous job. Her songs were beautiful and filled with emotion. Rowan, for me was the star of the show and I loved how he had moulded his personality into the role. Ron Moody is a hard act to follow, but Rowan certainly created a fantastic, funny and almost lovable villain. I saw the 1994 production and felt this was far better due to the larger stages, more interesting set and extra "buzz" on stage. Well done to all the cast! I will be booking to see you again. - Julie Phillips
17 Jan 09
I have been four times now to see this show and it is absolutely brilliant in almost every way. Eric & Ross as Dodgers - superbly talented young performers, Jodie & Rowan, the Sowerberry's all excellent too. Great choreography, staging & scenery! - John
17 Jan 09
Can someone please vet these entries? Matt Kennedy posting twice, someone pretending to be Rowan Atkinson, somebody called Beth writing unintelligible drivel? The show was as good as a West End Musical can possible be (i.e. three stars!) but I went to see the originally cast Rosemary Leach, who has somehow disappeared without trace or coverage of her departure. I do hope there is nothing the matter - whatsonstage.com find out for me, please! - Cedric Hogarth
15 Jan 09
Brilliant night. Superb staging, excellent music and dancing. Rowan Atkinson was a perfect Fagan, a baddy but you could'nt help sympathising with him. Jodie was great I loved her As Long As He Needs Me and she looked GREAT. Robert Madge is a perfect Dodger and I predict a great future for him. We have booked again! - David Gray

MISS OLIVER AT YOUR PERIL! Utterly fantastic production, I was on a high throughout. I saw it on press night 14 Jan and it has got even better since I went on 19 Dec. Jodie Prenger is so warm, entrancing and what a voice! For me, the right mixture of motherly, raucous and brave. I do hope her voice holds out singing Oom-pah-pah every night! Wow.
The children are superb too, especially Dodger (have seen all 3 boys including TV performances). Harry has moved me to tears twice with 'Where Is Love'. Stunning sets, choreography, costumes...best show I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot! To those who say they were disappointed - you must simply be disappointed with life is all I can conclude. - Paula E Moore
15 Jan 09
The show was superb but i was SOOO DISSAPOINTED as Jodie was not performing which was why i went in the 1st place. I got some AU girl instead! although she was very good i was very dissapointed as Jodie should have performed all the shows, I love Sarah Lark as well and would have preferred to see her as Nancy rather than Tasmin as that is someone else who i voted for on the show every week alongside Jodie. However i am going back to see Oliver in a few weeks and i am really excited as it says i am getting Jodie! Harry was a fantastic Oliver aswell and Eric was a great Dodger! - michelle dewire
15 Jan 09
Amazing! I saw this show a few weeks ago and it was fantastic! I didn't see Jodie but Tamsin has such a beautiful voice so i wasn't really that annoyed. Harry Stott was Oliver when i went and he was outstanding! His voice is seriously beautiful and it seems asthough he has improved so much since I'd do anything! He was always a favourite of mine in the show so i was so excited when Gwion told me i had Harry. Eric Dibb-Fuller was the Dodger and he was superb! He seriously did shine throughout the whole production! Rowan Atkinson was hilarious, as expected. I noticed his teddy made an appearence aswell which made me laugh! Sarah Lark was also there which was a lovely surprise! Her voice is beautiful and she did a wonderful job as the strawberry seller. If you havent seen this i'd really recommend it! I'm going for my second time in 3 weeks and i cant wait! So go on... make yourself apart of the family! - Shelley

It is like the old Oliver I saw before but is very good. Jodie is fab.
I paid £75 and couldn't see the stage properly but it was well worth it. I know someone who once met one of the dancers and I only go to musicals. Michael Ball was really good but I liked Imagine This better. I throughly enjoyed being conned and treated like cattle but I am a woman and spend most of my time thinking of babies. - Beth
12 Jan 09
Reall disappointing - only worth seeing for Rowan Atkinson who carries the production. The production felt as if it had been rushed - and unfortunantly the Oliver we saw was very weak. - K Howell

Great family night out, 3 generations of our family attended and we all loved it - Hey, Rowan may not be the best singer but he has presence on the stage, we thought the gimmicks from him were entertaining. Everyone was fantastic and recommend for an entertaining evening out. We are booking again! :-) - Lisa

I really enjoyed Oliver last night. Jodie was excellent as Nancy - she has done so well with the opportunity she's been given. Rowan Atkinson was surprisingly good too, since I have long been a great fan of Ron Moody. - RosieCrucian
06 Jan 09
Saw Oliver last night and it was poor. Rowan Atkinson is not good as Fagin, Artful Dodger was ok, Oliver was good, Nancy was excellent and all the other characters did a decent job. However everything looked a tad underehearsed, which is awful considering the prices charged. Another thing I found appalling was the fact that they allowed touts even in the foyer of the theatre. One of them was very loud and was trying to sell some balcony seats for £90!! Staff did nothing to prevent this kind of situation - Fern
04 Jan 09
Saw Oliver last night and it was fantastic. Rowan Atkinson is tremendous as Fagin, Artful Dodger was captivating, Oliver was vulnerable without being sickly sweet and all the other characters were excellent as well. The evening passed far too quickly. This is one of the best West End shows that I have ever seen,=. - Fiona
03 Jan 09
Rowan plays Fagin like a pantomine villain. Too many jokes alluding to Bean and Blackadder.
Jodie is like a bad drag artist. Good in parts, but the emotion remains the same throughout her performance. She moves very awkwardly indeed and like one very much older than her 28 years. and Bill had to noticeably slow down to prevent himself catching her as she leaves Fagins lair.
Her vocals are good when she doesn't move - when she does, she is out of breath.
But the crowd didn't seem to mind. Having lately watched the Ruthie Henshall version on youtube - this was like Widow Twankey.
Good Dodger, and great Mr Sowerby - he was sinister and amusing all at once - a real Dickensian character! - Jane

Crazy lot! Rowan was awesome. P.S Ron Moodys performance in the screen version was one of the finest musical performances you are likely to see....remind me how good his voice was ;o). - Kye

I think people are being to harsh on Rowan. I thought he played the part brilliantly. Jodie was also excellent as Nancy. I really enjoyed the show and would recommend it to anyone. - Charlotte

Who cast Rowen Atkinson as Fagin???
I am fed up of musical theatre producers getting big names, just to sell tickets and they are not up to the job. He CAN NOT sing. I DO NOT spend my hard earned cash to listen to poor voices in musical theatre - it is happening more and more lately. I want each and every voice to be perfection. Jodie is amazing - fantasic vocals and acting. - Steve Graham.
26 Dec 08
Disappointing in general. Jodie is very good, but Rowan Atkinson is a weak fagin and can't sing at all. Box office staff were very rude, the show is selling itself so i guess they feel the don't even need to try. WE sat in Stalls C 3-4, the view is quite restricted although they seel it at full price. - Laura

Jodie is superb. Will be a major west end star. Rowan, although he can't sing makes a good effort. Generally great theatre. - Matt Kennedy
