starstarOnly mediocre production from the obviously past it Trev Nunn. Thank GOD for Katie Mitchell and her gob-smacking genius at the NT.Beautiful performances from some, notably Monica Dolan and William Gaunt ranging to the risable from Francis Barber and Gerald Kyd (who he?) - Joe Smith06 Jan 08
starstarstarstarstarStunning production by that genius of the theatre, Trevor Nunn. I had the misfortune to see Katie Mitchell's version at the NT, a travesty. What a difference a great director makes. The cast are uniformly terrific. To single any out we should first start with Ian McKellen who makes so much of the part of Sorin that he practically takes over the play. He is in short a joy to watch as is that so under-used talent Jonathan Hyde. Romola Garai's entusiastic, naive Nina is so sensitively portrayed it is heartbreaking to watch, and perfectly matched with Richard Goulding's tremendous debut at the RSC as the frustrated son Konstantin, bordering on the madness he finally succumbs to. Francis Barber et al, all tremendous. Checkov is a great writer, and this production is a great credit to the RSC and Mr Nunn. Go and see it if you can. - rds14 Jun 07
starstarEven 1.5 stars, I was extremely dissappointed by this production, apart from Ian McKellen and Monica Dolan's performances. Much better to see Lear, by far the better of the two plays, coming in at 5.5 stars. - Greg Musson10 Jun 07

starstarstarstarWorth seeing for McKellan alone. His Sorin is a lovely to watch - and I left cursing the playwright for not making the part larger! Neither Konstantin nor Nina worked for me, but Melanie Jessop was good as was Gerald Kyd. Good - not great. - Welthorpe01 Jun 07
starstarstarGreat production of one of the world's most over-rated plays by the world's most over-rated playwright. McKellen and Gaunt are both on fine form. The understudy - Melanie Jessop - deserves to be reviewed as she is first class. - Gareth James01 Jun 07
starstarstarstarstarHi, this play is on tour the same time and places as King lear. The plays are with the same cast. I believe they are in the UK until July, then Singapore from mid July, New Zealand in August, and not sure after that but my dad is i so an post again once i've asked:) - Emily02 May 07
