hi - I started a thread about this show elsewhere. I could not agree more with the review....a truly wasted unmagical evening, hideously over-produced. If only it had the rawness and imagination of something like Shockheaded Peter. I worry that the Exchange get so bogged down with being classic and classy that they turn out dead pieces.....how a piece about a circus with the audience jsut inches from the performers can be so dull is quite a feat. I have to say that I keep trying to direct there but keep being ignored....well I'm sorry that there have been many productions there that I could have directed better in my sleep. I feel the Exchange get sidetracked in getting the period cut of a dress right or the turn of an antique chairleg - what they need to work on is the imagination and magic...so much potential in that great space. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.168.167)

Oh dear what a mess. Once again so much effort and skill and talent has gone into the production, but it has over produced it and killed it. I know that theatre loves being lavish but once again it would do it no harm to be a little raw. This play, with its strong circus element, manages a couple of aerial moments, but the performers are so covered in harnesses and other support that any frisson of excitement and danger is squashed. The whole production needs an element of shockheaded Peter about it - and also some stronger direction to make an absurdly complex plot at least accessible. What the hell was going on? It needed some really good circus performers in it, not actors who had a few days workshop, likewise with the tiger movement. sorry we ventures into Play School territory theatre.
Sadly ten out of ten for effort but what an odd unengaging evening. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.117.133.118)
