I've been reading with interest the reviews of this show, and many others I have enjoyed, and find that the bad reviews are pointless and non-constructive, they pick at the bad parts of a show, some of which I disagree with, for the sake of it.
I believe that most of these reviews are written by die hard fans of Andrew Lloyd Webber, needing a show that is rivals Phantom or Les Mis. While I agree that this is sometimes neccesary in the West End there are enough theatres to accomodate plays like Romeo and Juliet, plays that appeal to a younger audience, the audience that is still going to be going to the theatre in 30/40 years time.
To review this show, I admit that it's not great, and if anyone has actually bothered to look into the French one, it's completly different, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The singing from most of the main cast, including Jane McDonald, is excellent, and the songs while not inspired lyrics wise, are very catchy. The cast are young energetic, and entusiastic, mainly like this show. If your fun, young and looking for a good night out then give this a go.
Maybe if critics, and on-line reviewers were younger shows like Rent, Taboo, Romeo and Juliet, and We Will Rock You would be more successful, they are after all the future.

Sensational! A really talented cast; Juliet and Romeo in particular were very good. Jane McDonald wasn't bad; she seemed to enjoy it and her singing was good. Jane's acting wasn't bad. The songs were a treat. This would be a good CD; I hope it goes on tour this year around the UK. I wish all the cast well until its closure on 8 February. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.105.161.223)

Really enjoyed it - rather to my disappointment, I only booked because I wanted to see the worst flop since Dance of the Vampires!! Lorna Want can't act (she looks utterly vacant all the time) but has an astounding voice, and although my initial thought to the dual suicide was "Good riddance" because they were both such unlikeable characters, I cried buckets during "Empty Sky" and Mercutio and Tybalt's deaths. Considering that I hate the play (it's thw only Shakespeare I won't watch, I hate it) this was seriously good. And yes, some of the lines are dreadful (the "Men, they are fools, they're like stubborn mules" had me in hysterics!) there are also some very poignant and thoughtful ones. Really hope they don't shelve the cast album just because it's closing - it's much better now than it was on opening night. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.194.16)

Isn't it amazing!! The show posts earlier closing notices and suddenly the reviews are all five stars. Could these 'reviews' be from cast and crew members. Maybe their families. Whatever. I have no connection to the production - I just enjoy going to the theatre - and believe me, this production is awful. What a waste of a good theatre. The cast need not be dis-pirited. If they are really that good there will be other offers. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.189.171.250)

Saw the show last Wednesday (20-11-02) and can't understand why it has attracted such vitriolic remarks. I liked the sets, thought the score was good and all the cast can deliver a song. I've seen all the musicals in the West End over the last 10 years or so and this was a long way from being the worst. My own favourite show running at the moment is Taboo, but I'll definitely go to see this one again. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.166.17.214)

Saw the production this Saturday, ending in a standing ovation which was well deserved by ALL the cast. Andrew & Lorna sang beautifully as did all the other main stars. How this ever made it into the country is beyond me. I can't remember who said "Smokey Robinson could eat alphabet soup and shit better lyrics", but he could have been referring to Don Black's contribution to this atrocity. The fact that some punters have given the show a standing ovation makes me fear for the future of western civilization - perhaps they're the same people who seriously think the Blessed Diana was a Great Briton... - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.168.168)

Take a mega-French musical spectacle, squash it into a small box, savage some of its sizzling songs, ditch the dance, garnish with clumsy English clichés and voila - Romeo and Juliet, The Musical.
David Freeman and renowned lyricist Don Black are the villains.
Rather than a translation, they opted for a reworking of Gerard Presgurvic’s sparkling spin on Shakespeare’s tragic tale of teenage angst and love.
Unlike Bernstein and Sondheim’s musical milestone West Side Story, Presgurvic remained true to Shakespeare’s setting.
Black and Freeman change little here as the warring Montagues and Capulets fiercely roam the streets of ancient Verona, and the euro-pop score is just what kids need to win their interest.
But the electric street dance scenes of the French original have been hacked out to fit the claustrophobic theatre.
Downsizing was inevitable for both the cast and set for the enormous French extravagances to fit a West End stage.
But this has blurred the edges of the action and forces the two families uncomfortably close together, resulting in an odd lack of focus.
Likewise, John Cameron’s awkward re-orchestration of some of the music blunts the tunes and leaves them floundering in a musical melee.
Don Black and David Freeman cut seven songs from Presgurvic’s score and add instead awkward dialogue full of banal utterings: “Here goes” says Juliet as she swallows the sleeping potion.
Black’s lyrics can be tacky, too as he crucifies the musical romance of hit French song Aimer with his rewrite: “Your eyes, these are my rivers”.
Other lyrics shine: “Fools, men are fools. They’re like stubborn mules…”
Unusually the stars are about the right age with a young Andrew Bevis as Romeo and 15 year old Lorna Want as Juliet.
Bevis is smooth with a rich voice but without spunk and gang leadership. Want is girlish and charming and makes the best of some naff lines: “I must learn to curb my adolescent ways”. Yeuch!
There is no room here for anything between the two but tepid romance, let alone a reason to top themselves.
Jane McDonald, star of BBC’s docu-soap The Cruise, plays Juliet’s nurse with as much acting oomph as Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch – nice voice though!
Sevan Stephan (Friar Lawrence) has a fab voice on a good day and Alexis James (Tybalt) is great as he oozes hate. But Matt Dempsey’s Benvolio is as scary as a pink feather boa.
It is vandalism of a great French musical spectacle but kids will love it

The music's OK but, as many others have said, the lyrics are awesomely bad. "Hatred is a way of life and you can cut it with a knife" was bad enough, but "Tybalt, you're going to die, Tybalt, noone will cry" was too much to bear and "Your eyes, these are my rivers" (with Juliet's response "Your arms, these are my mountains") beggared belief. For many of us in the audience our initial open-mouthed astonishment had turned to helpless giggling by the time Romeo and Juliet killed themselves.
A few of the audience stood at the end. Just as many had walked out during the first act. Those who left early missed a classic. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (193.129.127.2)

What on earth gives the producers the right to murder one of the most beautiful plays that has ever been written? this should never been allowed to come to the stage and everyone connected with the show should hang their heads in shame ... there is already a musical version of Romeo & Juliet - it's called West Side Story. Shakespeare for the brain-dead, music for the tone-deaf, dance routines straight out of an end of term school production. I waited to see the official première of the show to write my "review". I give it 5/5. Anyone critisizing the music should "listen" to it. It is simply fantastic. This show has great tune after great tune: from "We love to hate, Kings of the world, Fools, Two different worlds, These are my rivers , She came from me to Empty sky.
The translation of the original french Lyrics is quite good even if it does loose the spirit of the wedding song "these are my rivers".
The cast offers a very powerfull performance. Young Lorna Want as Juliet is truly expectional. She sings like an angel and her death scene at the end is one of the best moment of the show. David Bardsley as Lord Capulet offers a very moving performance in "she came from me" while Sevan Stephan as Friar Lawrence gives shivers to the audience in his tormanted "empty sky" where he sings remarkably well.
I don't think there is any "weak" performer in the cast, they all do their work pretty well. The show has chaged a lot from the preview but only for the better.
I don't think the music critics are being fair calling it (like Notre Dame de Paris) trash europop. Where we in the same theatre yesterday night? Where i was, people stood up for the show, laughed, giggled and applaused after many songs! I wish a long life to Romeo and Juliet in the West End! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

The best comedy I've seen in ages. The music was dreadful; the lyrics even worse - "Men who refuse to bend, where will it all end". In one memorable song, every line began with "Ha ha haaaa!" (whilst the audience went "Hee hee heeee" ). The costumes were wholesale High Street - Romeo's badly-cut leather trousers made his legs look like pipe cleaners. Juliet was marvellous - a beautiful voice which shone despite the appalling songs. Jane McDonald as the nurse was warm, funny and matronly, belting out her solo with vigour. However she did ham it up a bit at times and seeing her having her boobs groped by Mercutio was quite disconcerting. The highlight of the show is the masked ball - seemingly set in Dickens & Jones. Shop dummies sprayed gold and adorned with disco lights line the stage. When Romeo meets Juliet, the partygoers launch into a strange slo-mo dance which unfortunately looks as if they're straining to pass wind. When Romeo and friends escaped the ball by hiding behind the dummies and wheeling them around on their pedestals, the audience erupted into peals of laughter. Go now or miss the best night out in ages. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

What a tragedy! Tears were rolling down my face from Act 1. I haven't laughed so much in ages. As a comedy it was brilliant! It was so awful, so truly achingly awful on so many levels it's hard to choose. Let's start with the sets - everyone seemed to be wheeled in on a sort of trolley complete with wonky wheels - not to mention the wobbly mannequins, and much of the action taking place behind a huge filter screen which looked like a pair of black tights. Then there was the spitting Friar who seemed to mistake anguish with looking constipated. The fight scenes were hilarious - especially when the girls grab each other by the hair and start some frenzied head bobbing. The dialogue was pitiful (Juliet's moving "let me summon death" speech as she drinks the death potion is replaced with a breezy "Here goes" as Juliet downs it like Red Bull). Lamentable lyrics - (oh those rhymes will haunt me forever: "Men are fools/just like stubborn mules"). When Romeo is told Juliet has "died" and legs it out the theatre stalls door we thought he was running for the toilet. Truly a tragedy of epic proportions. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Why oh why try and compete with West Side Story or indeed the bard himself ? It isnt a bad show but certainly not as great as you Jane fans say it is and of course you are biased which is fair enough!.
I personally am reluctant to comment on the show at all after seeing only a second preview but you lot have so hear goes!! the set is all scaffolding cages and looks very cheap and nasty and the fight scenes were a mess.
Little Lorna Want was badly out of tune on many occasions and I hope Ms MacDonals acting improves as it was abysmal on saturday and the idea to give her gags in this show is ridiculous"when juliet calls her an old battleaxe, and she jokingly replies" Dont call me old" Oh Please, how old hat is that!
But most of all the songs, non memorable at all and can not remember a single one as all seem to mush into each other as they are so similar.
A lot of work needs to be done if they dont want a mauling on November 4th - USER: Whatsonstage.com
