starstarstarstarstarI was blown away by this production. Some very unique ideas from Michael Grandage, and a brilliant performance from Kenneth Branagh. - USER: Whatsonstage.com04 May 02
starstarstarstarstarA breathtaking Richard and a marvellous production. Branagh is mesmerizing - slyly funny at first, and then, having wooed us as he does Lady Anne, turning ever darker and more paranoid. With costume and body language, Branagh shows us the difference between the inner and outer Richard - he is both the self-loathing cripple and the master manipulator bent on power and revenge. And Branagh speaks Shakespeare's language as if it was his native tongue. The supporting cast, direction and production are also uniformly excellent - bravo to everyone involved, and let's hope to see Branagh on the stage again soon and often! - USER: Whatsonstage.com09 Apr 02
starstarstarstarWow! Branagh stole the show-his depiction of Richard was very clever, we winessed a man who was sly, manipulative not to mention murdourous and greedy yet at the same time he was playful, skilled and very very charming! Being 18yrs old, it is the first stage encounter i had with Richard Branagh and i was blown away. My only reservation was that not all of the original aspects of Richard were captured-once he put on the suit there was no sense of a man who had been cruelly set apaprt from society due to his disability and this is a major theme and something that affects Richard on a daily basis. On the whole though, the production was very slick and the set and lighting created a real atmosphere in such a vast venue - simply breathtaking!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com31 Mar 02
starstarstarstarstarI thought it was truly truly exceptional - Branagh is a major talent. I hope this show has a long life beyond this short run at the Crucible. - USER: Whatsonstage.com26 Mar 02
starstarstarSo off a few of us trekked from London to the Sheffield Crucible to see Michael Grandage's version of "RICHARD III" with Kenneth Branagh. It was a very enjoyable production, though I must confess the opening monologue took me by surprise as I had purposely avoided all the publicity. I found it amazing was how Branagh became Richard physically with his dead left arm, his still right leg and bending over to give the illusion of the hump instead of using make-up or clothing. Never before had I seen a Richard whereby the actor became the role physically. The whole ensemble played well off each other, the use of light and smoke worked to give the right meancing tone, or the heat of the battlefield; and it was a pleasure to watch for almost three hours. The second big surprise for me was how satirical I found the production, and found myself laughing in places I'd never thought funny before. Irony, satire and social commentary all in one. The timing was perfect. The third surprise was when the stage door keeper came out and said if we wanted to leave programs, leave a name and address inside and the crucible would send it on! Usually in London, you get scorned upon. Finally, the ushers even told people off for photos' - why do people need to take a photo as well as buy the poster and program? It was nice to see quite a few London celebs in the audience as well, showing that regional theatre is just as good as London theatre. I can only hope Richard III will start a long renewed relationship with Kenneth Branagh, Michael Grandage and the Stage; and we might see him at the Donmar or another London theatre soon. Now roll on Doctor Faustus on Wednesday. Regards Phil Hobbs www.ltrc.co.uk - USER: Whatsonstage.com26 Mar 02
starstarstarstarstarIn all the years I have been seeing live theatre, I have never been so moved, excited, amazed, inspired and delighted by an individual performance. Kenneth Branagh is truly brilliant and I feel quite honoured to have had the chance to see this wonderful "Richard III". Sorry for gushing but the experience of being in the prescence of such a powerful talent has left me feeling quite euphoric!! See it if you can! - USER: Whatsonstage.com25 Mar 02
starstarstarstarstarThis is an excellent production and it is wonderfully acted. I felt the acoustics were a little dead though. It's well worth trying the box office for the odd return ticket. You'll be sorry if you miss this one! - USER: Whatsonstage.com21 Mar 02
