Synopsis

Movie mogul David O'Selznick has just shut down production of Gone With The Wind. Determined to rewrite the script, he engages the reluctant services of 'script doctor' Ben Hecht, who has never read the book, and director Victor Fleming, poached straight from the set of The Wizard of Oz. His reputation on the line, and with nothing but a stockpile of peanuts and bananas, Selznick locks the three men into his office and a marathon creative session begins...

David Baxter - 10 October 2007: starstarstarstar

A late cancellation of a Glengarry Glen Ross preview allowed me to make a first trip to the Tricycle (just like the Cottesloe, but smaller) for this play about the creation of Gone With the Wind. Moonlight & Magnolias is a real treat full of lightning fast dialogue and overflowing with the type of comedy seen in Hollywood films of the 40s. All four actors are excellent and Francis O'Connor has designed one of the best sets I have seen, no matter the size of the venue (how did all that waste paper appear so quickly?).The linking of slavery and the rise of Fascism to the outsider status of Jews in Hollywood is tenuous and clumsy and I'm not sure how much of Ron Hutchinson's play is based on facts but, frankly my dear, etc., etc. Moonlight & Magnolias deserves to follow The 39 Steps from Kilburn to the West End....
