| I enjoyed Susannah York's performance, although it was always going to be a challenge to dramatise a novel with a single and involved narrator without making her - rather than each actor in turn - the source of all characterisation. The burden was heavy and allowed others to gurn and simper as required: think Les Dawson, Charles Hawtrey... Heathcliff and Catherine, supposedly the same age, unfortunately looked like father and daughter: that didn't help, and sadly I just didn't buy either of Amanda Ryan's performances. Maybe she ought to read the novel. Meanwhile, some of the diction was truly atrocious. (Not David Whitworth as Joseph: Brontė actually wrote him that way.) Soft southerners, such as I, would have appreciated surtitling. All in all, there have been better adaptations. - S Thomas | 03 Oct 08 | |
| I couldn't agree more with Mr Foley, absolutely shameless (no pun intended) - Mr Collins | 29 Sep 08 | |
| After much anticipation I went to see the Rep producton and could not believe what I was watching.Nellie and Heathcliff were good (enough)performances, and so they should be, but the rest of the cast was an assortment of very average to dire and just totally embarrasing. There was no passion or connection with the cast and it seems like half of it was played for laughs.I am shocked that an oscar nominated actor such as Suzanna York has put her body and name to this production, very poor and very dissapointing to say the least - Mr Graham Foley | 28 Sep 08 |
