| Loved it- thought brought the play very up to date in a way that Pirendello himself would've been proud of. Yes the endings were confused but that almost was part of it. Parts of it were very intense and moving, like the bit where the film maker left the theatre carrying the dead child. Only thing you could argue about is you can't interchange theatrical characters (the family) with documentary which you could do with the original when they interrupted a play in progress. Overall really enjoyable night out at the theatre. - Miranda | 14 Aug 08 | |
| The changes to the framing device are appropriate, amusing and thought provoking. The main themes around identity and how we make sense of everyday life developed by the Six Characters story remain true to the original. Excellent. - Tadpole | 08 Aug 08 | |
| I found this both intellectually envigorating and theatrically highly satisfying. Though the preview I saw had a few glitches, the acting was wonderful, the effects skilfully achieved and of real beauty and power and not only did it feel an organic whole (and, to my mind much more interesting than the Pirandello war-horse) but it kept me and my partner talking into the small hours. Fantastic, compelling theatre - like a really good Complicite show, but with a meatier, more text-based rigour. - Finzi | 09 Jul 08 | |
| For me, the director's indulgence completely swamped this play; instead of the 6 characters driving it along, the play was unbalanced by "re-contextuallising" (no, I don't know what that means either) the opening and closing of the play as the Dignitas-style euthanasia of an apparently reasonably healthy youth. An elephant was suddenly deposited in the boat. And it sank; splendid acting though. - Paul Randall | 09 Jul 08 |
